Case Type:

CRIMINAL CONVICTION

Fraud Type:

Outcome:

Troy Merner was charged by the state in Coos County with three misdemeanor counts of theft by deception, unsworn falsification of mileage reimbursement requests, and tampering with public records or information; and one felony count of wrongful voting. Merner, a former Republican state lawmaker who resigned when the charges became public, moved from his home in Lancaster to Twin Mountain in 2022 but still cast a ballot in a 2023 town election in Lancaster and continued to serve on the Lancaster select board. In exchange for pleading guilty to the theft by deception and the voter fraud charges, the other two were dropped. Merner was sentenced to two six-month jail sentences that were suspended for two years pending good behavior, ordered to pay $1,100.06 in restitution; he also agreed to give up his right to vote and not to seek any elected office for two years.
