Marcus Raul Arevalo was charged by the state of California in Los Angeles County on 17 counts related to election fraud: of the 13 felony counts, five were for registering fictitious persons, four were for registering non-existent persons, and four were for procuring and offering false or forged instrument. The remaining four counts were misdemeanors for interference with prompt transfer of completed voter registration affidavits. Arevalo was involved in a scheme to get Carlos Antonio De Bourbon elected mayor of the city of Hawthorne. He was attempting to register 8,000 fictitious, nonexistent, or deceased voters to receive mail-in ballots. Arevalo pleaded no contest to four of the felony charges, three for registering fictitious persons and one for procuring and offering false or forged instruments in exchange for dismissal of the remaining 13 charges. He was sentenced to serve two years in prison for each count.
