Case Type:
CRIMINAL CONVICTION
Fraud Type:
FRAUDULENT USE OF ABSENTEE BALLOTS
Outcome:
Craig Callaway, a former member and president of the City Council of Atlantic City, was charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with one count of depriving, defrauding, and attempting to deprive and defraud residents of New Jersey of a fair and impartially conducted election process by the fraudulent procurement, casting, and tabulation of ballots. Callaway and others working at his direction paid individuals in Atlantic City $30–$50 to act as authorized messengers for mail-in ballots. These individuals submitted Vote-By-Mail application requests to the Atlantic County clerk’s office and received ballots for voters listed on the forms. However, instead of delivering the ballots to the voters, they handed them over to Callaway and his subordinates, who cast these ballots in the 2022 general election without the consent or knowledge of the voters. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 24 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
